. christie smith joins us with the latest on the fire captain's condition. good morning, christie ir. >> reporter: good morning to you. i finally spoke with a fire captain on scene. he said a chance to speak to that injured firefighter and he's still in good spirits, still feeling some pain, though. he was injured when a section of ceiling collapsed on him and he was actually trapped under that for just a little while. there is still a crew here on fire watch this morning. there was some concern still about the stability of the burned building. it was burned so badly and they sprayed so much water on it, that's where the concern is coming from. it started around 8:30 last night at this townhome complex on willowleaf drive. it took about three hours for firefighters to knock the flames down. when they arrived, they say flames were pouring through the roof and spreading through the attic. 18 people displaced, six units damaged but everyone made it out okay as far as the residents go. but a captain told me from the moment they arrived, everything happened first. >> it quickly went to a

off guard. christy smith with a look at the weather conditions. >> reporter: good morning to you. we have had just a couple of sprinkles in the east bay. daily city, it was starting to sprinkle there, but nothing significant. we're right by the bay bridge toll plaza. normally when it's raining, you see the puddles. drivers going right through it. i think someone said it earlier, if you could leave now, we could certainly feel it in the air this morning. the wind advisory signs are not lit up yet, but you can feel the pull, at least on the san francisco side of the bridge. i spoke with the chp this morning and they're waiting for the weather to move in. they expect those advisory signs to go up very soon. they're showing it's not real science how they do this. chp officers let them know when it gets really windy on the bridges. the officers i spoke with, if it can blow your hard hat off, go ahead and light up those signs. i wanted to show you before we go. these are the american flags out here by the plaza. you can see them moving but certainly not stiff. we know the wind is heading y

morning they're putting those finishing touches on everything there. christie smith has just arrived on scene with all those volunteers and we'll check back with her to check in and see what's happening a little later on coming up at 5:00 a.m. >>> in the meantime an oakland family is turning thanksgiving dinner into a community affair. fred morris and his family have been feeding the hungry for the last five years. morris, his mother, godmother and aunt cook and use their own money and donations from the community to prepare that dinner. they're expecting to feed about 500 people this year. >> it is people that, you know, has lost their jobs and people that has -- you know, have children. some parents say well, i didn't ever really think i would be in this line, but they're in the line now. >> we get folks from all walks of life. it's great to show love and to give the love to the community. >> the morris family will serve their thanksgiving dinner at the rain bow recreation center in oakland today at 11:00 a.m., and they're going to serve that until the food runs out. very, very nice.

francisco's bernal heights neighborhood. christie smith is live outside the san francisco county jail with the explosive conclusion to it all. good morning. >> good morning to you. that's where that san francisco-year-old san francisco man is waking up in the county jail. he had just been released from federal prison when he got into a violent altercation with san francisco police last night that involved cars and the chase. he was holed up in a building. it finally ended thanks to an anonymous tip. that man had barricaded himself inside the home on appleton street and s.w.a.t. cruise had to use flash bangs before it ended. officers spotted a man on federal parole woman oith an outstanding warrant in a green mustang. he sped off and hit a patrol car. the officers were okay. that car later found abandoned across town. then a break. a tip that he was in a home. police brought out their crisis negotiation team, s.w.a.t. team, canine units to try to end it all peacefully. >> officers responded, set up that perimeter, formulated a plan. once they made contact with the suspect, he surrende

where christie smith joins us live with more on the captain's condition and the damage to that apartment complex. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. i just spoke with the captain on scene here in san jose and he said that that firefighter will be kept overnight for observation. he said that he was hurt when falling sheetrock actually hit him, but i wanted to show you what the scene looks like here this morning. a crew is still here on fire watch. they're telling me there is concern about the stability of the building from the fire and all the water that they actually poured on it overnight. this is a three-alarm fire that displaced 18 people. a firefighter just told me when they got heres are flames were huge. they were pouring out of the building and most residents were already outside, but it damaged six units. two of them completely uninhabitable. it took them three hours to knock this down. residents in neighboring units had to evacuate while this was going on. captain ron brown just told us how that firefighter, a 16-year veteran, got hurt. >> it turns

the bay area airports. christy smith made it through all the crowds to get to sfo. how's it looking out there, christy? >> reporter: good morning, jon. right now would be a good time to come to sfo if you are coming down today. there's not much in the way of crowds. i think the most difficult thing we face is the roads, trying to get here in the very heavy rain we faced on highway 101 coming south. it looks like from the people inside a lot of travelers decided to get here really extra early this morning to try to beat the crowds that will be here a little bit later this morning. there are travelers actually sleeping in various pockets of the airport this morning, ready to get away for the thanksgiving holiday. sfo expecting a record number of travelers. more than 1.2 million travelers passing through here between the friday and the monday. i spoke with one woman from loren and she was sitting with others who said she was getting here much more early. >> i am going to los angeles to be with my family. i decided to be here early knowing there's going to be so many people here. so i'd

. mike is watching the roads, christina is watching the forecast. we start with christy smith live at sfo. a lot of people have been sleeping there overnight trying to catch their morning flight. >> reporter: sleeping, watching movies. trying to pass the time. people starting to double park here at the curbside drop-off. security lines getting much longer inside. frustrating delays here yesterday. i just spoke with the manager and he tells me so far, so good this morning. they're on time but many travelers just said, you know what, i'm not taking any chances. they got here early enough to sleep in the terminal as the security gates opened this morning. terminal 2 is the busy place with virgin america having several early flights this morning. this year, sfo expecting a record passenger rate. that was enough to get travelers up and out. i spoke with one woman who arrived three hours early just for a short hop to l.a. >> to be with my family. i'm excited to be here early, knowing there's so many people here. so i'd rather be early. expecting a lot of people. >> reporter: so i just check
